Deradoorian is Angela Deradoorian, and although this is her debut she has proven herself as someone to watch out for. She began her career playing bass and singing for indie band Dirty Projectors before branching out on her own, first releasing a solo EP in 2009, and eventually making a name for herself collaborating with high profile acts such as Discovery, Avey Tare’s Slasher Flicks, Bjork and many others. This debut, titled The Expanding Flower Planet, showcases a much more refined and thought out effort from Deradoorian, which could cause her name to come up with the same reverence as her collaborators.
Deradoorian’s lyrics seem purposely vague, but come off as someone searching for meaning in herself. On the closer, “Grow”, she repeats the mantra “Love, Grow, Love” almost as if she’s singing it to herself. “Darklord” has her asking what is possible and what is truth while “Komodo” explores her fear. The result is a deeply personal album that should resonate with anyone searching for the same answers.
Musically, The Expanding Flower Planet is mostly an eclectic collection of spacey loop based instrumentation tied together by Deradoorian’s soft, but powerful voice. It’s unpredictable, fun and empowering all at the same time. Most songs, including the opening track, “Beautiful Woman”, employ a constant drum beat and low key bass but are carried by the vocal performance. Whether singing solo or harmonizing with herself, her vocals are what make the album.ui
Deradoorian’s debut effort is both spacious and personal, creating huge soundscapes in which the listener has no choice but to look inward. Each song brings up new feelings and ideas that bring you closer to her mindset with every listen. The Expanding Flower Planet is a debut that is years ahead of what a first album should be, and because of that Deradoorian has a shot of becoming a sensational household name.
